SNOWHOW OY LTD

Snowhow Oy comes from Oulu, which is a well-known center for high technology and winter studies. The company was founded in 1997 by architect Kimmo Kuismanen and civil engineer Seppo Mäkinen. Later snow construction supervisor Jarmo Arponen from the world’s largest snowcastle in Kemi joined to our team.

SEPPO MÄKINEN, M. Sc. Civil Engineer

Seppo has made research on construction technique and engineering of snow and ice and built experimental constructions where theories and calculations have been tested. He has also developed computer programs for snow engineering. Methods for measuring strength and deformation of snow construction and safety standards have also been developed. Research reports have been published in the University Of Oulu.

KIMMO KUISMANEN, M. Sc. Architect

Kimmo has been involved in "Winter Cities Movement" and ecology discussions, and he has designed buildings, tourist areas, hotels and town plans in Finland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Norway and Russia. After criticism of the "skywalk cities" it was natural to move towards ecological architecture and natural materials like snow.

JARMO ARPONEN, Snow Building Supervisor

Jarmo has been the responsible person in Kemi, where they have build the largest snow castle in the world. He has conducted the building process every winter between 1996-2000. Her has also developed snow building techniques, machines and so on.
